The historical spread of the word ummah (أمة) cannot be reconstructed country-by-country with certainty because:

• The word predates Islam in the Arabic language.
• Its first recorded "widespread" use is in the Qur’an (7th century CE).
• Modern countries did not exist then.
• The spread followed trade routes, conquests, migration, scholarship, and later the global Muslim diaspora.

Thus, more recent nations such as USA, etc.... are also part of the “Ummah”.   The following is a historically informed approximation of the order in which the concept and term ummah became established.
