Look closely at a peanut.
It is small.
It is ordinary.
It can be purchased by the handful, roasted in a pan, boiled in a pot, ground into a sauce, pressed into oil, mixed into food, sold beside a road, carried in a farmer's basket, or eaten almost without thinking.
Yet behind that little shell is an extraordinary story.
It is a story about Africa.
It is a story about agriculture.
It is a story about trade.
It is a story about colonialism.
It is a story about food.
It is a story about soil.
It is a story about farmers.
It is a story about migration.
It is a story about technology.
It is a story about Africa's relationship with the rest of the world.
And it is also a story about possibility.
The peanut is not originally an African plant. Modern cultivated peanut, Arachis hypogaea, originated in South America. Archaeological evidence places ancient peanut use in South America thousands of years ago, after which the crop spread through global exchange to Africa, Asia, and elsewhere.
But origin is not destiny.
Africa took the peanut and made it part of African life.
Across the continent, the crop became known widely as the groundnut because the developing pods grow underground.
That simple characteristic gives us the first great lesson of the peanut.
Sometimes the most important things are happening where nobody can see them.
Above the ground there may be nothing spectacular.
Below the soil, however, the plant is doing its work.
That is also a useful description of Africa itself.
For centuries, outsiders have often looked at Africa from the outside and concentrated on what could immediately be seen: commodities, minerals, landscapes, wildlife, cities, political boundaries and markets.
But beneath the surface is another Africa.
There are farmers.
There are agricultural traditions.
There are markets.
There are recipes.
There are entrepreneurs.
There are scientists.
There are young people.
There are women who process food.
There are families who depend upon crops.
There are communities that have learned to survive drought, changing markets and changing governments.
There are millions of stories beneath the surface.
Peanuts.Africa is about bringing those stories to the surface.
Why build an entire book and media series around peanuts?
Because peanuts are much more than peanuts.
They are food.
They are agriculture.
They are commerce.
They are nutrition.
They are culture.
They are history.
They are science.
They are industry.
They are employment.
They are international trade.
They are soil.
They are family.
They are opportunity.
And they are small enough that almost anyone can understand the beginning of the story.
A child can understand a peanut.
A farmer can understand a peanut.
A scientist can understand a peanut.
A chef can understand a peanut.
A trader can understand a peanut.
An investor can understand a peanut.
A teacher can understand a peanut.
A government can understand a peanut.
A community can understand a peanut.
That makes the peanut an unusually powerful educational object.
Instead of beginning with a complicated economic theory, we can begin with something that people can hold in their hands.
A peanut.
Then we ask:
Where did it come from?
Who grows it?
How does it grow?
What does it do to the soil?
What does it do to the farmer's income?
What does it become?
Who buys it?
Who processes it?
Who makes money from it?
Who eats it?
How is it transported?
What happens to the shells?
What happens to the oil?
What happens to the leaves and plant material?
What products can be created from it?
What happens when technology is added?
What happens when African farmers receive better seed, storage, irrigation, transportation, processing and market information?
And perhaps the most important question:
What could Africa build around the peanut?
There is something wonderfully strange about the peanut.
It looks like a nut.
It tastes like a nut.
It is sold with nuts.
But botanically, it is a legume.
It belongs to the same broad botanical family as peas and beans.
Its scientific name is Arachis hypogaea.
The word "hypogaea" is associated with its unusual habit: the developing fruit is underground.
The peanut plant flowers above ground.
Then something remarkable happens.
The plant produces structures that move downward into the soil.
The peanut develops underground.
That is why the African name groundnut makes such immediate sense.
The crop literally places its valuable product beneath the ground.
This gives Peanuts.Africa an important symbol.
Grow above the ground.
Build below the surface.
Harvest what you have developed.
A farm is like that.
A business is like that.
A civilization is like that.
Education is like that.
A human life is like that.
What people see is only a portion of what has been built.
The peanut's journey to Africa is part of the enormous biological and economic exchange that followed European contact with the Americas.
The crop originated in South America and was subsequently carried to other parts of the world. Historical research describes its movement to the coasts of Africa and then onward through global trade networks.
This history should be told carefully.
The peanut did not originate in Africa.
But once it arrived, African societies incorporated it into agricultural systems, cuisines and commercial networks.
That distinction matters.
A crop can originate in one place and become culturally important somewhere else.
Potatoes became central to European food.
Tomatoes became central to Italian cuisine.
Chili peppers became fundamental to many Asian cuisines.
Maize became fundamental across much of Africa.
And peanuts became deeply integrated into African food systems.
History is not simply about where something began.
It is also about what people do with it after it arrives.
In Africa, the peanut became the groundnut.
That name itself tells a story.
The crop became associated with the soil.
And the soil is where African agriculture begins.
In many African farming communities, the groundnut has served both as a food crop and as a cash crop.
The Food and Agriculture Organization's material on Malawi, for example, describes groundnut as an important food and cash crop and notes its contributions to protein, cooking oil, vitamins and farm income. Because it is a legume, groundnut can also contribute nitrogen to agricultural systems.
That makes the groundnut more interesting than a simple snack.
It is a biological machine.
It produces food.
It produces oil.
It interacts with the soil.
It creates marketable products.
It creates opportunities for processing.
And it can become part of a larger agricultural system.
This is why Peanuts.Africa should not be merely a "peanut website."
It should be a groundnut knowledge system.
Few regions demonstrate the economic importance of peanuts more dramatically than West Africa.
During the nineteenth century, commercialization of peanuts expanded rapidly in parts of West Africa.
Historical research describes the growth of peanut production along the Gambia River in the early nineteenth century, followed by expansion into other parts of the Upper Guinea Coast. African cultivators and traders responded quickly to new commercial opportunities.
This was not simply a farming story.
It was an economic transformation.
Peanuts became connected to international markets.
They became connected to European oil mills.
They became connected to colonial trade.
They became connected to transportation systems.
They became connected to taxation.
They became connected to labor.
And, inevitably, they became connected to power.
A peanut can therefore become a lens through which we examine colonial Africa.
Instead of beginning the history of colonialism with a map, a treaty or a European conference, we can begin with a farmer standing in a field.
The farmer grows groundnuts.
A trader arrives.
The crop enters a market.
The crop leaves Africa.
Someone elsewhere processes it.
Money changes hands.
A government taxes the trade.
A railroad may be built to move the commodity.
A port becomes important.
An international industry develops.
Suddenly, the little peanut has become part of global political economy.
The history is complicated.
Peanut commercialization created opportunities for African farmers and traders, but it also operated within systems of unequal power.
Historical scholarship on West Africa documents how peanut production became deeply connected to European commercial demand and colonial economic structures. In Portuguese Guinea, for example, peanut production became a major export activity during the nineteenth century, with labor systems that included both enslaved and contract labor.
That history cannot be romanticized.
Agriculture can create wealth.
Agriculture can also become a mechanism for extraction.
The difference depends upon who controls:
This is one of the central questions of Peanuts.Africa.
A farmer may grow a peanut for a very small amount of money.
Someone else may buy it.
Someone else may transport it.
Someone else may clean it.
Someone else may roast it.
Someone else may package it.
Someone else may advertise it.
Someone else may sell it.
And someone else may own the brand.
By the time the peanut reaches the consumer, its value may have multiplied.
The farmer, however, may still receive only a small portion.
Peanuts.Africa asks whether Africa can capture more of that value.
Imagine a single peanut.
It begins underground.
A farmer harvests it.
It is cleaned.
It is dried.
It is stored.
It is transported.
Then the possibilities multiply.
The peanut can become:
Roasted peanuts
Boiled peanuts
Peanut butter
Peanut flour
Peanut paste
Peanut sauce
Peanut oil
Confectionery
Protein ingredients
Animal feed
Food ingredients
Cosmetic ingredients
Industrial products
The exact commercial opportunities depend upon technology, quality, markets, regulation and economics.
But the fundamental principle is simple:
Do not export the opportunity when you can build the industry.
This is not an argument that every peanut should be processed locally.
International trade has value.
Exports create foreign exchange.
Global markets matter.
But Africa should continually ask:
How much value can be created before the product leaves the continent?
That question applies not only to peanuts.
It applies to cocoa.
Coffee.
Cashews.
Cotton.
Sesame.
Fruit.
Fish.
Minerals.
Timber.
And countless other African resources.
Peanuts.Africa therefore becomes a case study in African industrialization.
The farmer is often described simply as a producer.
That description is too small.
A farmer is an engineer of biological systems.
The farmer must understand:
weather,
soil,
seed,
water,
pests,
disease,
plant spacing,
harvest timing,
storage,
markets,
labor,
machinery,
risk,
and money.
A farmer makes decisions continuously.
Plant too early and weather can cause problems.
Plant too late and the growing season may become insufficient.
Use poor seed and yield can suffer.
Use contaminated or improperly stored product and food safety can become a problem.
The groundnut therefore provides an opportunity to connect traditional agricultural knowledge with modern science.
The future farmer may use:
satellite imagery,
weather forecasting,
soil sensors,
mobile banking,
digital marketplaces,
GPS,
drones,
artificial intelligence,
remote sensing,
mechanized planting,
mechanized harvesting,
improved storage,
and laboratory testing.
The field may look much like it did generations ago.
The information surrounding the field can be completely different.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the groundnut is its relationship with soil.
Legumes can form relationships with microorganisms that help fix atmospheric nitrogen into forms usable by plants.
That does not mean that planting peanuts automatically solves every soil problem.
It does mean that legumes can be important components of sustainable agricultural systems.
The groundnut can therefore become part of a larger conversation about:
crop rotation
soil fertility
erosion
organic matter
water management
fertilizer efficiency
climate resilience
regenerative agriculture
The farm should not be viewed as a factory that simply removes things from the earth.
It should be viewed as a living system.
Take something out.
Put something back.
Protect the soil.
Protect the water.
Protect the farmer.
Protect the future.
A nation cannot be strong if its people cannot reliably eat.
Food is infrastructure.
Roads are infrastructure.
Electricity is infrastructure.
Water is infrastructure.
Communications are infrastructure.
But food is also infrastructure.
A peanut can contribute protein and energy to diets.
Groundnut products can become part of traditional meals and modern food industries.
In Malawi, for example, FAO materials identify groundnut as an important source of protein and cooking oil as well as agricultural income.
The lesson is larger than Malawi.
Africa needs to think about agriculture as infrastructure.
Not merely something poor people do.
Not merely something rural people do.
Not merely something governments subsidize.
Agriculture is one of the foundations upon which civilization rests.
Every peanut has a culinary story.
There is no single African peanut cuisine.
There are many.
Different communities have developed different methods of roasting, boiling, grinding, seasoning, mixing and cooking groundnuts.
Peanuts enter sauces.
They enter soups.
They enter stews.
They become snacks.
They become ingredients.
They become street food.
They become household food.
They become commercial products.
This is where Peanuts.Africa becomes a media project.
Imagine a series called:
Each episode visits a different African community.
A cook prepares a traditional dish.
A farmer explains where the peanuts came from.
A scientist explains the crop.
A historian explains how peanuts arrived in the region.
An entrepreneur explains the business.
A young person explains what the future could look like.
One peanut.
One community.
One story.
Another media series could follow the peanut from field to market.
The camera begins in a farm.
Then follows the crop.
Farm.
Village.
Collection center.
Warehouse.
Truck.
Market.
Factory.
Port.
Export destination.
Restaurant.
Kitchen.
Table.
The peanut becomes a traveler.
And the audience travels with it.
would become an economic geography series.
It would answer:
Where does the peanut begin?
Where does it go?
Who touches it?
Who earns money?
Where is value added?
Where is value lost?
Where could technology improve the process?
Where are the bottlenecks?
Where are the opportunities?
Any serious agricultural story must examine women.
Women participate throughout African food systems.
They farm.
They process.
They trade.
They cook.
They sell.
They manage households.
They preserve food knowledge.
They create businesses.
They train children.
They often operate at points in the value chain that outsiders fail to see.
Peanuts.Africa should deliberately document those contributions.
Not as a symbolic gesture.
As economic history.
The woman selling roasted groundnuts on a street corner is participating in an economy.
The woman processing groundnut paste is participating in an economy.
The woman managing a farm is participating in an economy.
The woman operating a food-processing company is participating in an economy.
The question should not simply be:
"How many women are involved?"
The question should be:
How much economic power do they control?
There is an entire entrepreneurial ecosystem hidden inside a peanut.
Consider a hypothetical town.
One person produces seed.
Another grows peanuts.
Another buys them.
Another transports them.
Another cleans them.
Another packages them.
Another roasts them.
Another produces peanut butter.
Another sells food containing peanuts.
Another designs the labels.
Another builds the website.
Another handles payments.
Another provides financing.
Another exports.
One crop.
Dozens of businesses.
Hundreds of jobs.
Thousands of transactions.
That is the Peanut Economy.
Peanuts.Africa should map that economy.
The peanut industry should be understood as a value chain.
Seed.
Fertilizer.
Equipment.
Water.
Tools.
Knowledge.
Financing.
Farmers.
Workers.
Irrigation.
Planting.
Cultivation.
Harvesting.
Drying.
Cleaning.
Sorting.
Storage.
Quality testing.
Packaging.
Roasting.
Grinding.
Pressing.
Food manufacturing.
Oil production.
Ingredient production.
Trucks.
Rail.
Ports.
Warehouses.
Markets.
Digital commerce.
Stores.
Markets.
Restaurants.
Street vendors.
Supermarkets.

The peanut is therefore not one business.

Peanut production is distributed across multiple African regions.
West Africa has historically been particularly important in the global peanut economy, while groundnuts are also cultivated in Eastern and Southern Africa.
Production differs dramatically by country, climate, soil, farming system and technology.
Historical production data compiled by FAO have included major African producers such as Nigeria, Sudan, Senegal, Mozambique, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Mali, Tanzania and Egypt, illustrating the geographic breadth of the crop across the continent.
There is no single African peanut farmer.
There are many.
There is no single African agricultural system.
There are many.
That diversity should become part of the Peanuts.Africa story.
Nigeria deserves a major chapter in the story of African groundnuts.
The history of northern Nigeria includes the famous groundnut trade and the groundnut pyramids.
The pyramids were more than piles of agricultural produce.
They became symbols.
They represented agricultural abundance.
They represented trade.
They represented the importance of agriculture to the regional economy.
And they eventually became symbols of an era when the Nigerian economy was much more heavily associated with agricultural exports before petroleum became dominant.
The groundnut pyramid therefore gives us another question:
What happens when a nation moves away from agriculture?
And another:
Can agriculture become strategically important again?
Peanuts.Africa should document that history.
Senegal has another major place in the history of the groundnut.
The commercialization of peanuts in Senegal was deeply connected to nineteenth-century international markets.
The crop became central to export agriculture.
That history demonstrates how one agricultural commodity can influence:
land use,
labor,
transportation,
markets,
government policy,
international trade,
and national identity.
The Senegalese groundnut story should therefore be told as an economic history, not merely an agricultural history.
Malawi provides another important perspective.
Groundnut is important to food security and agricultural income there, and FAO materials identify challenges including low-yielding seed, soil fertility, rainfall variability, pests, disease, post-harvest management and aflatoxin contamination.
This illustrates an important principle:
Growing more is only part of the solution.
The crop must also be safe.
It must be stored properly.
It must reach the market.
It must earn the farmer a reasonable return.
It must survive changing climate conditions.
And the farmer must have access to information.
The future of African agriculture therefore depends not merely on increasing production.
It depends on improving the entire system.
Tanzania belongs in the Peanuts.Africa story because the country represents the tremendous diversity of East African agriculture.
Groundnuts can be part of farming systems alongside other crops.
The Tanzania story also provides an opportunity to examine the relationship between agriculture, domestic markets, regional trade and the Indian Ocean.
Dar es Salaam connects Tanzania to international maritime commerce.
Rural farmers connect the country to the land.
Between those two points is an enormous economic system.
Peanuts.Africa can tell that story.
Peanuts are not only rural.
They enter cities.
Walk through an African city and agriculture is present everywhere.
Markets.
Restaurants.
Street vendors.
Food manufacturers.
Wholesale distributors.
Truck depots.
Warehouses.
Supermarkets.
Restaurants.
Hotels.
Schools.
Hospitals.
The city eats the countryside.
The countryside supplies the city.
The relationship is circular.
A strong agricultural economy therefore strengthens urban economies.
A strong urban market can strengthen rural agriculture.
Peanuts.Africa should document that connection.
The peanut story crosses the Atlantic.
The crop became part of African American agricultural and culinary history.
Its history in the United States is connected to African agriculture, slavery, emancipation, Southern food traditions and later agricultural science.
One of the most famous figures associated with the American peanut story was George Washington Carver.
Carver became famous for his agricultural research and promotion of crop diversification and peanut utilization.
His work demonstrates another powerful lesson:
A crop becomes economically powerful when people discover more things to do with it.
The peanut does not have one destiny.
It has many.
Carver's legacy is often reduced to a list of peanut products.
The larger lesson is more important.
He demonstrated the power of agricultural research.
He helped farmers think beyond a single crop.
He promoted the value of crop rotation.
He explored ways agricultural products could become useful commodities.
The lesson for Africa is straightforward:
Research is infrastructure.
A laboratory can be as important as a road.
A seed research station can be as important as a warehouse.
A food scientist can be as important as a trader.
An agricultural engineer can be as important as a banker.
The peanut economy therefore requires knowledge.
Peanuts.Africa should have a science division.
It should explain:
plant biology,
genetics,
seed varieties,
soil science,
nitrogen fixation,
water requirements,
plant diseases,
pest management,
harvesting,
storage,
food chemistry,
oil extraction,
protein,
nutrition,
food safety,
and processing.
The objective is not to make agriculture complicated.
The objective is to make science accessible.
A farmer should be able to watch a five-minute video and learn something useful.
A student should be able to read a page and understand it.
A policymaker should be able to find data.
An investor should be able to understand the value chain.
A journalist should be able to find reliable facts.
That is the information mission of Peanuts.Africa.
The peanut has enormous potential.
But potential does not eliminate risk.
One important food-safety challenge is aflatoxin contamination.
Poor drying, storage conditions and environmental stresses can contribute to contamination risks.
FAO material on Malawi specifically identifies aflatoxin contamination as a significant challenge in groundnut production and notes risks associated with drought, post-harvest handling and storage.
This is exactly why Peanuts.Africa must not become propaganda for peanuts.
It should become a source of knowledge.
If there is a problem, discuss it.
If there is a solution, explain it.
If technology can help, demonstrate it.
If farmers need training, provide it.
The goal is not to say:
"Peanuts are wonderful."
The goal is to say:
"Let's understand peanuts completely."
Climate change presents agriculture with difficult questions.
Rainfall can become less predictable.
Drought can become more severe.
Extreme heat can affect crops.
Soil degradation can reduce productivity.
Farmers need better information.
This means the future peanut farm may require much more than a seed and a hoe.
It may require:
weather data,
soil data,
satellite imagery,
irrigation technology,
improved varieties,
better storage,
insurance,
market information,
and financial tools.
Peanuts.Africa should become a bridge between traditional agriculture and modern technology.
Imagine a farmer taking a photograph of a peanut plant with a mobile phone.
Artificial intelligence could potentially assist with identifying visual symptoms that may indicate disease or stress.
Imagine a farmer receiving weather information before planting.
Imagine a digital marketplace showing current buyers.
Imagine a farmer entering the expected harvest and receiving an estimate of transportation requirements.
Imagine a cooperative using satellite imagery to understand agricultural patterns.
Imagine researchers using geospatial data to map production.
Imagine Peanuts.Africa becoming the public information layer connecting these technologies.
The future of agriculture may be increasingly digital.
But the farmer remains physical.
The soil remains physical.
The plant remains physical.
The harvest remains physical.
Technology must therefore serve agricultureβnot replace the farmer.
Peanuts.Africa can become more than a website.
It can become a portal.
A digital home for:

Market information.
Weather.
Training.
Best practices.
Agricultural education.
Science.
History.
Geography.
Economics.

One crop can support an ecosystem.
The ultimate objective of agricultural development should not necessarily be to make every farmer a factory owner.
But farmers should have opportunities to move up the value chain.
A cooperative might own a processing facility.
A village might create a branded product.
A regional company might package locally produced peanuts.
A national company might build an international brand.
A continental company might sell African peanut products globally.
The question is not whether Africa can grow peanuts.
It clearly can.
The question is:
How much of the peanut economy can Africa own?
Imagine a package.
On the front:

Underneath:
GROWN IN AFRICA
The package tells a story.
Where the peanuts came from.
Who grew them.
What country.
What cooperative.
What region.
How they were processed.
How they were tested.
How they reached the consumer.
Modern consumers increasingly want stories.
Africa has stories.
The challenge is turning stories into brands.
Children should be introduced to agriculture early.
A child should understand where food comes from.
Not because every child must become a farmer.
But because every child is a consumer.
Agriculture is science.
Agriculture is mathematics.
Agriculture is geography.
Agriculture is economics.
Agriculture is biology.
Agriculture is engineering.
Agriculture is history.
Agriculture is business.
A peanut can teach all of those subjects.
Imagine a classroom experiment.
Plant a peanut.
Observe it.
Measure it.
Record rainfall.
Measure growth.
Study roots.
Examine soil.
Calculate yield.
Calculate cost.
Calculate profit.
Cook the harvest.
Then discuss the global economy.
One peanut becomes an entire curriculum.
Suppose a farmer plants a certain area.
The farmer knows:
seed cost,
labor cost,
fertilizer cost,
transportation cost,
land cost,
processing cost,
and selling price.
Now mathematics becomes practical.
Revenue.
Cost.
Profit.
Yield.
Break-even.
Return on investment.
Risk.
This is agricultural mathematics.
Peanuts.Africa can teach mathematics through something people understand.
Agricultural engineering can transform the peanut economy.
Machines can improve:
planting,
cultivation,
harvesting,
shelling,
cleaning,
sorting,
drying,
storage,
processing,
packaging,
and transportation.
But technology must match the environment.
A machine that works perfectly on a giant farm may be inappropriate for a smallholder.
The question is therefore not:
"What is the most advanced machine?"
The question is:
"What is the right machine for this farmer?"
That is engineering.
A farmer needs money before the harvest.
That creates a financing problem.
Banks may consider agriculture risky.
Farmers may lack collateral.
Weather can destroy production.
Prices can change.
Transportation can fail.
Storage can be inadequate.
Therefore agricultural finance must understand agriculture.
Possible tools include:
cooperative finance,
microfinance,
insurance,
warehouse receipts,
contract farming,
digital payments,
supply-chain financing,
and investment funds.
The peanut can therefore become a classroom for agricultural finance.
Trade connects farms to the world.
Peanuts have historically been an international commodity, with production concentrated in major regions including Africa and Asia. Historical global market research identifies West Africa and East Asia among the world's major peanut-producing regions.
Trade is neither automatically good nor automatically bad.
The question is what happens inside the trade.
Who controls the price?
Who controls transportation?
Who controls processing?
Who controls the brand?
Who receives the profits?
A successful African agricultural strategy should seek competitive markets while increasing African participation in higher-value activities.
Africa has something previous generations did not have at the same scale:
the possibility of a more integrated continental market.
That creates enormous possibilities for agricultural trade.
A farmer in one country may eventually reach consumers in another.
A processor may source from several countries.
A brand may become continental.
A digital marketplace may connect farmers and buyers.
Transportation networks may connect agricultural regions.
The peanut can become a small but useful example of what continental economic integration might mean in practice.
Food can create relationships.
Countries trade food.
People share recipes.
Chefs travel.
Farmers exchange knowledge.
Scientists collaborate.
Students study together.
Business partnerships develop.
Peanuts.Africa could therefore create a form of agricultural diplomacy.
Not diplomacy conducted in government buildings.
Diplomacy conducted through:
food,
farming,
science,
business,
education,
and culture.
A field does not ask whether the person eating its harvest is from one tribe or another.
A peanut does not ask which language the farmer speaks.
Food can become common ground.
That does not erase political differences.
But it can create a practical reason to cooperate.
Farmers need markets.
Markets need farmers.
Factories need raw materials.
Consumers need food.
Businesses need customers.
Countries need trade.
People need livelihoods.
Agriculture therefore provides one of the most practical foundations for peace:
shared economic interest.
Africa has a young population.
The future agricultural workforce will increasingly need to combine traditional knowledge with modern skills.
The next generation of farmers may also be:
software developers,
drone operators,
engineers,
scientists,
accountants,
marketers,
photographers,
filmmakers,
and entrepreneurs.
The farmer of the future may carry a smartphone in one hand and soil in the other.
That is not a contradiction.
It is progress.
A domain name can be a web address.
Or it can become a statement.
Peanuts.Africa
says that Africa has a story worth telling.
It says agriculture deserves media.
It says farmers deserve visibility.
It says African food deserves documentation.
It says African agricultural history deserves preservation.
It says African entrepreneurs deserve markets.
It says African science deserves a platform.
It says the peanut is worth looking at more closely.
And when we look closely at the peanut, we discover Africa.
Peanuts.Africa should never be limited by the peanut.
The peanut is the beginning.
From the peanut we can discuss:
food.
Then agriculture.
Then soil.
Then science.
Then economics.
Then trade.
Then history.
Then colonialism.
Then technology.
Then entrepreneurship.
Then education.
Then culture.
Then the African diaspora.
Then the future.
That is why this is not simply a book about peanuts.
It is a book about Africa through the lens of the peanut.

And we believe that sometimes the best way to understand something very large is to begin with something very small.

Imagine standing in a field.
The sun is rising.
The soil is warm.
There are rows of plants.
A farmer bends down.
The plant comes out of the earth.
Attached to its roots are the groundnuts.
Something that was hidden is suddenly visible.
That is the image with which Peanuts.Africa should begin.
Because Africa has things hidden beneath the surface too.
Ideas.
Businesses.
Scientists.
Farmers.
Artists.
Historians.
Engineers.
Children.
Dreams.
Resources.
Knowledge.
Stories.
Possibilities.
The world often looks at Africa and asks what Africa can give the world.
Perhaps the better question is:
What can Africa build for itselfβand then share with the world?
The peanut provides one answer.
It begins in the soil.
It passes through human hands.
It enters kitchens.
It enters markets.
It crosses borders.
It creates businesses.
It creates history.
And it connects people.
The peanut is small.
The story is not.
One crop.
One continent.
Thousands of stories.
Millions of possibilities.
This book is intended as the foundation of an expanding book and media series.
Future editions can add original interviews, country-specific agricultural data, maps, photographs, recipes, farmer profiles, economic statistics, scientific research, documentary transcripts and historical archives.
The goal is not simply to tell people about peanuts.
The goal is to create a permanent body of knowledge around the African groundnut economy and the people connected to it.
